While the Dead Kennedys relied quite a bit on blunt force trauma, the band was also musically nimble on this debut album — even subtle at times.
Singer and lyricist Jello Biafra commanded most of the attention, justifiably so, but guitarist East Bay Ray was a monster on this seminal slab of hardcore punk, balancing aggression with sprinkles of melody.
Biafra, meanwhile, countered his brazen politics with generous doses of humor. It was a game-changing album for him as a writer and its basic themes have been a part of his music ever since. Rock fans used to be kind of stupid.
In partnership with Brian Eno, and with input from friend and musician David Gans, the band approached the album with a profoundly different mindset. Joy Division took all of the core emotional values of punk and expressed them with the same ferocity but as seen through a different musical lens, laying the groundwork for post-punk, a much more open-ended path.
Four decades later it still sounds vital. Has there ever been a more perfect record made for hormone-addled year-olds with more acne than options? Lead singer Bon Scott had died, choking on his own vomit, just as the band was peaking in popularity. Peter Hammill — A Black Box. Some people are rather opinionated IMO.
Superb material, epic riffs, but second-rate singing, at best. There are nine-million bicycles in Beijing.
And at least nine-million LPs in the eighties …. What about Breaking Glass? Being a film score and having some crazy pre Lady Gaga clothing, it remains for me a great movie, with songs from the album that was sounded the death knell for Punk. Looks like jazz stinks here but it was not dead.

Liam Barker first became aware of Basho having purchased Tompkins Square's reissue of Venus in Cancer, released in This led him on an incredible fact-finding expedition, unraveling the many layers of mystery surrounding Basho's life and death, all deftly compiled and depicted in his documentary film, Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho.

Nashville, five young girls teach themselves their instruments playing along to the radio. Initially named 'The Pivots' and by the end of '67 christened as The Feminine Complex, they were playing out and developing a local following including radio and television appearances.
They created their own versions of popular songs, a style that reflected their need to express their own experience of girlhood. Gender bending 'boys' songs' they simply changed the lyrics, modifying the major characters and pronouns creating a space for themselves inside the music where they were able to become the agents of their own wishes, needs and desires. Come '68, they appeared on NBC's nationally syndicated Showcase '68, hosted by Lloyd Thaxton paving way to their cult status.
It is not allegorical to say that in some way, they widened the entrance to the historical vacuum that a generation later would come to be filled by Riot Grrrl and rock 'n' roll camps for girls. The Feminine Complex were not just a good band because they were girls, or because they were the first girls.
They are a good band because they are. Lucky for us, we have these recordings, so we can continue to hear why. Hide And Seek Now I Need You Are You Lonesome Like Me?
